Totally agree that most of the band promos you'll see out there are pretty redundant. As a photographer who specializes in high-end promotional imagery for bands & musicians, I'm always on the lookout for sources of inspiration. Like Nick Schnelle mentioned above, I frequently turn to artistic mediums that are completely outside the realm of photography, such as magazine ads, movies, music, and even live dance performances. My ultimate goal is to give my clients something that's both eye-catching AND a true representation of their unique "voice" as an artist. I go to great lengths to ensure that the promo images I put into each artist's hands will be something they'll want to send out to the four corners of the globe and say "This is ME. Take notice!"

By the way, I also run a blog centered around online promotion for bands & musicians, and I just posted an article entitled <a href="http://tampabandphotos.com/2012/03/06/30-awesome-ideas-for-band-photo-shoots/" rel="nofollow">"30 Awesome Ideas for Band Photo Shoots"</a> that will probably be of interest to your readers.

Thanks for the article!

Great overall article on a very buzz worthy topic currently being tossed around the independent music community. I really liked your 4 tips on dealing with music supervisors. I think tip 3 sticks out the most to me as one that often gets overlooked but shouldn't.

I was just reading some of the frustration in some of the postings. The music industry is a rough one, just about everyone that has been in it has had feelings and thoughts that they are never going to move forward but you will never know if your turn is right around the corner if you quit trying. You have to love making music to be in this industry because if you don't make it at least you still have the love for the music you are making!

I really liked this article, it gives "middle class" artists a sense of value and a realization that a good living is still out there to be made even if you dont strike it big beyond your wildest dreams.

Well that's about it... I give up. There is no opening in the music industry for starving artists anymore. The music buisiness used to be all about the starving blues artists, now its just rich kids who can buy their way into it, and big business owned by people who DO NOT CARE about the artists...

So you have to have your music albumized, with a bar code, pay a bagillion fees, and then THREE MONTHS LATER, the MIGHT CONSIDER putting your tunes up... I can't believe I thought this was an option.

I'm selling my studio. It's wicked pointless.

Hi Rich, thanks for the questions.

If you are talking about performance royalties for playing the song on the radio, the radio station is required to pay the songwriters. If you play a cover song at a live show, you should share that info with your ASCAP/BMI rep. The venue should pay the royalties, if there was enough to collect.

All you need to worry about for recording is getting a license from HFA. You pay them a small fee for the number of copies you will make. I would assume that HFA takes a piece of that fee to pay their bills, and the rest goes to the song writer.

Once you get the license from HFA follow whatever guidelines they ask.

I hope that helps.

Who collects royalties on your behalf if you do a cover? If you are with ASCAP, do they find the sales of your cover? Or does HFA? Does HFA give a cut of the sales you make?
